This systematic review, published in the Italian Journal of Pediatrics examines oropharyngeal dysphagia in children with cerebral palsy, including its prevalence, types, impact on nutritional status and associated health complications such as aspiration, gastroesophageal reflux and respiratory problems.
Swallowing difficulties are common in children with cerebral palsy and can affect eating, drinking, nutrition, growth and overall health. The review found that dysphagia affects a high proportion of children with cerebral palsy and is commonly linked with delayed swallowing, aspiration, poor nutrition and growth delay. It also highlighted that assessment approaches remain inconsistent, reinforcing the need for standardised evaluation and personalised multidisciplinary support to improve safety, nutrition and wellbeing.
