This resource from The Lancet journal, compiles recent evidence on causes, diagnosis and management of cerebral palsy.
Cerebral palsy is a lifelong physical disability affecting movement and posture, caused by non-degenerative brain injuries, malformations, or genetic variations occurring before, during, or shortly after birth. Up to 30% of cases have a genetic contribution. In high-income countries, prevalence has fallen by up to 40%, but remains higher in low- and middle-income countries. Advances in early diagnosis now allow detection from as early as 3 months, enabling timely interventions that improve outcomes. New medical, regenerative, and rehabilitation therapies are enhancing function and participation, while growing awareness of adult health challenges highlights the need for lifelong care.
