Lung Cancer Screening: Early Detection Saves Lives
Lung cancer is one of the most common causes of cancer death in Australia, but early detection gives people a better chance of survival. The National Lung Cancer Screening Program (NLCSP) will begin in July 2025 and aims to detect lung cancer early - often before symptoms appear, through the use of low-dose CT scans.
This free program is for people aged 50 to 70 who currently smoke or quit smoking within the past 10 years. It targets those at higher risk, even if they have no signs or symptoms of lung cancer.
Early detection can lead to more treatment options, fewer complications, and better health outcomes. By focusing on screening those most at risk, the program hopes to save lives and reduce the impact of lung cancer across Australia.
