‘When parents and families get a diagnosis of CP, they often feel confused about what the diagnosis means for their child’s future. They wonder what to do to best help their child. Emotional reactions can be strong and decisions can be difficult. Although the diagnosis of cerebral palsy may feel overwhelming, it does not define or dictate what your loved one’s future will look like.’

‘CP affects the whole family. Family members may feel confused, jealous, guilty, angry, sad, and fearful. Coming to terms with the emotions brought on by a CP diagnosis can be very challenging, even for the most mentally and emotionally healthy person. Make sure you have the support you need during this challenging time. You may benefit from counselling individually, as a couple, or as a family.'

It’s important to keep asking yourself — how am I coping? The most important member of your child’s team is you! It’s normal to feel drained, and tired, and sad, and stressed by the job of managing a significant disability. If you feel your physical or mental health slipping, make an appointment with your GP.

'For some of you this may be your first time feeling that you need some assistance working through your feelings or problems. There is no shame in seeking help. As the parent or caregiver you have to ensure you maintain your emotional, physical, mental, and spiritual health. The better care you take of yourself, the more energy and strength you will have for your child.’

‘Finding a team of professionals that you like is important since developing trust is a large part of being able to share your experiences and feelings.’

Whether it’s talking to your GP and health team or to other parents and carers, family members or friends, it’s important to focus time and energy on your own health and wellbeing.

Whether you are looking to find information about medical and allied health services, specialised group programs where you and your child can exercise together, or professional services to assist you with feelings of stress or anxiety, you will find links in this section to connect you with the professionals you need to support and fulfil your mental health.
