This systematic review, published in the Developmental Medicine and Child Neurology (DMCN) journal, examines evidence on conditions such as gastroesophageal reflux, constipation, swallowing difficulties, faecal incontinence, dental and oral health concerns, colorectal cancer and hepatic disease in adults with cerebral palsy.
The review found that evidence on interventions remains limited and generally low certainty, particularly for oral health and swallowing-related care. These findings highlight the need for greater clinical attention to gastrointestinal health and more research to guide assessment, prevention and management. Gastrointestinal and liver-related health concerns can affect comfort, nutrition, daily functioning and overall wellbeing in adults with cerebral palsy.
