This review published in the Augmentative and Alternative Communication, examined how adults with cerebral palsy who use AAC have been involved in research over the past 22 years.
Augmentative and alternative communication, or AAC, supports people with communication difficulties to express themselves, participate and have their voices heard. The review found that only a small proportion of studies included AAC users as research partners, with involvement occurring through advisory, collaborative and people-led approaches. The findings highlight the need for more inclusive research that involves AAC users meaningfully across study design, implementation, analysis and sharing of results.
