Sex is a normal part of life. Thinking about having sex makes everyone, including people with cerebral palsy, feel a range of different emotions from happy to nervous, excited and everything in between.
Lots of people with and without a disability can have anxiety about sex and sexual performance. When you have cerebral palsy, sex can be more complicated both emotionally and physically. This is completely normal.
At My CP Guide, we have created a video to help people better understand thoughts and feelings about sex.
What’s in the video?
The Let’s talk about sex and CP video talks about:
• How you might feel about sex when you have CP
• Things that might impact your sex life
• Positive communication with your partner
• The importance of consent
Sex can be great for your health and happiness, and can be enjoyed by everyone who wants it. People of all sexual orientations, gender identities and abilities, including people with cerebral palsy, can enjoy sex.
Our video is also available in the following languages on our YouTube channel:
Who do I speak to for support?
If you need advice about sex, you may want to speak to a trusted family member, friend, or healthcare professional. Your GP can provide you with information about how to have safe sex and can also refer you to other support services.
There are also services that you can access for support, online or by phone such as Ask Izzy. Ask Izzy can give you information and advice on sexual health and sexual identity. You can access Ask Izzy here.
On the My CP Guide site, we have a section of information resources dedicated to sexual relationships. You can find the Relationships section of our website here. We also have resources dedicated to Sexual and Reproductive health, which can be found here. All resources on our website can be filtered down to your relevant life stage.
Remember: Consent, get a yes!
