Our identity is made up of different traits; sexuality, culture, religion, gender, age, body, and abilities are all a part of our identity. Identity is ours to decide, no one else can tell you how to identify because it's who you are and how you feel. This is true for all people, including those with cerebral palsy.

At My CP Guide, we have developed a video that outlines what sexuality and gender means for different people.

What's in the video?

The sexuality and gender video provides information about:

  • What is sexuality
  • Labels and perception
  • What is your sex
  • What is your gender
  • Difference between cisgender and transgender
  • What does queer mean
  • Where to go for support

Labels for sexuality and gender identity are not fixed, and the labels you assign for yourself may change over time. Your identity is fluid, and this applies to our sexuality and gender identity as well.  Or you may choose not to give your sexuality or gender a label at all. And that is okay too.

Where can I find the video?

You can find the video on our YouTube channel, or by following the link here

What does this mean?

Who should I speak to if I need help?

If you need someone to talk to about sexuality or gender but don’t know who, you can reach out to a friend, relative or trusted healthcare professional. There are also peer-based LGBTIQ+ organisations and counselling services in the community that can provide support, anonymously and free of charge. There are also many professional organisations that can support you.

There are also services that you can access for support online or by phone, such as QLife. Q Life provides anonymous and free LGBTI peer support and referral for people in Australia wanting to talk about sexuality, identity, gender, bodies, feelings or relationships. You can access QLife here. If you need immediate assistance, Lifeline provides 24/7 online and phone crisis support for people in Australia.

On the My CP Guide site, we have information resources about sexual health and wellbeing. You can find the sexual health and wellbeing section here. All resources on our website can be filtered down to your relevant life stage.

Remember, how you label your sexuality or gender is completely up to you.
