Making Birthday Parties Accessible: Chandler’s Story
Birthday parties are such a big deal for kids. The cake, the games, the decorations, the laughter with friends, it’s all part of the magic. But for families like ours, accessibility can truly make or break the experience.
When we’re searching for venues, there are a few key things we look out for:
- Ramps and easy entry so kids using wheelchairs or mobility aids can get in without barriers.
- Wheelchair-friendly bathrooms (a must, but surprisingly not always a given).
- Accessible parking close to the entrance.
- Noise level, because some kids need a calmer environment.
- And most importantly—staff who are willing to listen and adapt.
A venue might have the most exciting activities, but if accessibility hasn’t been considered, it can leave kids feeling excluded instead of celebrated.
We recently had the best experience at the High Ropes & Glider at Social Fair in Cranbourne. It was one of those days that reminded me how much of a difference thoughtful planning and caring staff can make. The team went above and beyond—they weren’t just friendly and helpful, they actively made the ropes course accessible. The party organiser even arranged extra support, which meant every child, including mine, got to join in safely and confidently.
Did you know you can actually ask venues if they can provide extra staff or support? I didn’t, but now I do—and I’ll definitely be asking in the future.
Sharing stories like these matters—not only to help other families find welcoming venues, but also to gently encourage businesses to see how important accessibility really is. It isn’t an “extra”—it’s what allows all children to be included, to share in the fun, and to feel the same joy on their birthday as their friends.
Because at the end of the day, isn’t that what every child deserves? 💛
